AFT Campaigned for Biden from Coast to Coast

After winding up a bus tour in support of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and other candidates, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten tweeted out congratulations to candidates whose campaigns were supported by the union.

“We campaigned with (U.S. Rep. Angie Craig, (D-MN) on the #AFTVotes bus tour this year. Thrilled to see her re-elected,” one of Weingarten’s tweets read.

The AFT Votes bus tour made stops in 14 states, including swing states like Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Georgia.

The AFT billed the bus tour as a “get out the vote tour,” but Weingarten openly asked people to vote for presidential candidate Joe Biden and other Democratic candidates for Congress in press releases and in stops along the tour, which meant the tour was more about electioneering than getting out the vote.

At each stop on the tour, the union aimed to engage its members and other voters through peer-to-peer texting, phone banking, and the AFTvotes app.

“Everything we do,” Weingarten said in a press release, “this bus tour, the fight for a COVID-19 stimulus, confronting these crises, the Supreme Court fight, our GOTV work – is about preserving our democracy and making people’s lives better.”
