In Labor Day remarks, Cuomo supports unions bosses, not workers

By Suzanne Bates

In his Labor Day remarks on Monday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo claimed that he has protected workers from the “Janus decision,” while directing his remarks not to workers but to labor unions.

In 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Janus v. AFSCME that forcing public sector employees to pay union fees violates their First Amendment rights.

Cuomo was critical of the Supreme Court over the Janus decision, and his administration has worked to undo the protections given to workers in the ruling.

In advance of the Supreme Court’s decision on Janus, New York enshrined union protections in state law.

“We are fulfilling our destiny of making the labor movement the nation’s vehicle for progressive change and for social justice,” said Cuomo. “We’ve led the nation in… protecting public sector service workers after the Janus decision(s)….”

Cuomo also noted the heroic actions of New York public sector employees who were on the front lines of the fight against COVID-19.
