PSEA changes opt-out address, website not updated

SHARE:

A teacher who wanted to opt-out of paying dues to the Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA) found out the union changed the address where it receives mail, but only after she sent two certified letters to the old address.

The post office box where PSEA used to accept opt-out letters is still listed on the union’s website, but the teacher sent two certified letters to that address that were then returned and marked “box closed.” She sent the letters in November and January.

After the second letter was returned, she called the union and they told her there was a new mailing address for opt-out forms. The new address is:

PSEA 400 N. Third Street Harrisburg, PA 17101

PSEA says that teachers who opt out after its October 1 deadline have to pay for a full year of dues, but many teachers have had dues deduction stopped mid-year with free legal assistance.

Teachers who want to opt out of paying union dues can either send a certified letter to PSEA or resign through their local union, although some teachers say they have found that resigning through their local union is more difficult.

The teacher, who has now sent three certified letters to the union in order to opt out, recently received confirmation that the union received her third letter.
